How to Book Half-Day Leave

Sometimes you don't need a full day off. Team Toggle lets you book half-day leave for when you just need a morning or afternoon away from work.

When Half-Day Leave Is Useful

Half-day leave is perfect for:

  • Medical appointments – Doctor, dentist, or hospital visits
  • School events – Sports days, parents' evenings, or performances
  • Travel preparation – Getting ready for an early flight or long journey
  • Personal errands – Appointments that can only happen during work hours
  • Extended weekends – Leave early on Friday or start late on Monday

How to Request Half-Day Leave

To book a half-day:

  1. Navigate to Annual Leave from the main menu
  2. Click Request Leave
  3. Select the date you want
  4. Look for the half-day option (this may be a toggle, dropdown, or checkbox)
  5. Choose Morning or Afternoon
  6. Add any notes if needed
  7. Click Submit Request

Morning vs Afternoon

When booking half-day leave, you'll need to specify which half:

  • Morning (AM)

You're off in the morning and will arrive at work after lunch. Useful for early appointments or a slower start to the day.

  • Afternoon (PM)

You work in the morning and leave at lunchtime. Great for afternoon appointments or getting a head start on travel.

The exact times depend on your organisation's definition of morning and afternoon work hours.

How Half-Days Affect Your Balance

Half-day leave counts as exactly 0.5 days from your annual leave entitlement:

  • If you have 25 days annual leave and take one half-day, you'll have 24.5 days remaining
  • Two half-days equal one full day of leave
  • Your balance will show decimal values when half-days are used

Tip

Half-days are a great way to use up remaining leave at the end of the year if you have a decimal balance (like 2.5 days remaining).

Half-Days on the Calendar

Half-day leave appears on the team calendar but may be displayed differently from full days:

  • Some calendars show "AM" or "PM" indicators
  • Half-day entries may appear smaller or in a different style
  • Click on the entry to see full details including which half of the day

Approval Process

Half-day requests go through the same approval process as full-day requests:

  1. Your request is submitted and marked as pending
  2. Your manager is notified
  3. They review and approve or decline
  4. You receive notification of the decision

Managers can see which half of the day you've requested, helping them ensure coverage during the times you'll be out.

Combining Half-Days with Full Days

You can request half-days alongside full days for maximum flexibility:

  • Take Thursday and Friday off, plus Monday afternoon – arrive back mid-day after a long weekend
  • Book a full week but work Friday morning before leaving early
  • Take occasional half-days throughout the year for recurring appointments

Half-Days and Working Patterns

If you work part-time or have a non-standard schedule:

  • Half-days are based on your normal working pattern
  • If you don't work on a particular day, you can't book half-day leave for that day
  • Your half-day deduction is calculated based on your contracted hours

If you're unsure how half-days work with your specific schedule, check with your manager.

Cancelling Half-Day Leave

Half-day requests can be cancelled just like full-day requests:

  1. Go to Annual Leave
  2. Find the half-day request
  3. Click to view details
  4. Select Delete or Cancel
  5. The 0.5 days will be returned to your balance

Half-Day Option Not Available?

If you can't see the half-day option, your organisation may not have this feature enabled. Speak to your administrator if you need half-day leave functionality.
