How UK holiday entitlement works

Almost all workers in the UK are legally entitled to 5.6 weeks of paid holiday a year, known as statutory leave entitlement. For someone working five days a week, that's 28 days. Part-time workers get the same 5.6 weeks, pro-rata to the days or hours they work.

Statutory entitlement is capped at 28 days, so someone working six days a week still gets 28 days. Employers can choose to include bank holidays in this minimum, or give them in addition.

Irregular-hours and part-year workers

For leave years starting on or after 1 April 2024, holiday for people with irregular hours (such as zero-hours contracts) and part-year workers builds up at 12.07% of the hours they work in each pay period.

Starting or leaving part way through the year

Someone who joins or leaves during the leave year is entitled to a proportion of the full-year amount, based on how much of the leave year they're employed for. This calculator shows the exact figure; some employers round part days up, but they shouldn't round down below the statutory minimum.

Common questions

How many days holiday do I get working 3 days a week?

3 days × 5.6 weeks = 16.8 days of statutory holiday a year.

How many hours holiday is 37.5 hours a week?

37.5 hours × 5.6 weeks = 210 hours a year, which is 28 days of 7.5 hours.

Are bank holidays included in the 28 days?

They can be. There's no legal right to paid time off on bank holidays, so employers can count them as part of statutory leave or give them on top. See the UK bank holidays for 2026.

This calculator covers the statutory minimum in the UK and is a guide, not legal advice. Contracts can give more than the minimum.
